I can't download .zip or .rar format file
In this article:
What is a .zip or .rar format?
File types . zip, .rar, and .7z are special types of compressed folders that may contain one or multiple files. Essentially, this means that the contents have been squeezed into a smaller size and need to be extracted before you can open and use them.
These file formats require specific applications for the extraction process. Depending on the type of device you're using, you may select one of the methods below to unzip the contents of the folder.
How to manage the extraction
Once you've successfully downloaded the product file, you'll need to extract or unarchive it to get it in its original size and format. To extract zip, rar, and other archive folders, you need to use special software or apps, for example:
We recommend 7-zip for customers using Windows to download their file(s), which is available for free at 7-zip.org. If you're able to download and then need to decompress or "unzip" the file, you can also upload the file to Google Drive, which has recommended and free Google Drive "extensions" for decompressing and using your file.
For Mac users, the extraction process is typically automatic. However, if the operating system does not recognize .rar files, we recommend using The Unarchiver app, which is available for free at the App Store. If you're able to download and then need to decompress or "unzip" the file, you can also upload the file to Google Drive, which has recommended and free Google Drive "extensions" for decompressing and using your file.
For smartphones and tablets
There are special apps that you'll need to get. Most of them have free versions available, which are easy to use!
You can read our recommendations here, or you can:
- Go to the Google Play Store for Android devices like Samsung, Google, and Amazon Fires.
- Go to the App Store for iOS devices like iPads, iPhones, and iPods.
Solving common issues with .zip and .rar files
Here's how to solve some common issues when downloading .zip and .rar files on desktop:
Your .zip or .rar folder is empty
Make sure you select the option to Save it on your computer, and not to Open.
If that doesn't work, try clearing the temporary folders in your browser. Google Search should provide you with the most useful instructions on how to do that for your specific browser and operating system.
Error message: the file is corrupted, damaged, or invalid
Try downloading it again with a stable and fast internet connection. Even small, unnoticeable connection interruptions can produce these errors. Also, try downloading from a different, updated browser.
