How to upload digital products on Sellfy

We recommend you familiarise yourself with the Product Presentation to get the most out of our product preview tools before adding products to your account.

Note: Before you start uploading products to your store, make sure you check the list of products that aren't allowed on Sellfy. As the store owner, you must comply with Sellfy's Terms and Conditions and know what types of products you can and can't sell on our platform. 

  1. Log in to your Sellfy account
  2. Go to Products Add new product
  3. Choose between a single Digital product or a Subscription product with recurring billing (for more information about Subscription products click here)
  4. Drag & drop the product file onto the upload area or click Browse on your computer
  5. Describe and categorize your product as suggested in the Product presentation article
  6. Click Add media preview or Add image to edit your Product preview

How to upload multiple files?

Note: Sellfy allows for multiple product file uploads - if you prefer uploading files as a bundle, you don't have to upload each file one by one. You can include up to 50 files in one product upload.

If you have more than 50 files per product or if you'd prefer to offer your product as single or multiple folders, you can upload a compressed .zip or .rar folder.

How to upload streaming video

When uploading a new video product to your store, you will have the default choice of adding it as a downloadable product only, or you can include the additional option to allow the file to be streamable.

Note: We recommend using the .mp4 format for video files. For the streaming option, you can upload a file up to 10GB in size. However, for downloadable products, we recommend keeping the individual file below 5GB, to make the download process easier for your customers.

To select an option for the video file you need to:
  1. Log in to your Sellfy account
  2. Navigate to Digital products > Add new product
  3. Upload your video file
  4. Select between Downloadable, Streamable or both
  5. Click Save Product

Can I make my existing video streamable?

Yes, you can make any of your existing video products streamable. To enable the streamable option you need to add it for each existing video manually. You can follow the steps here:
  1. Log in to your Sellfy account 
  2. Navigate to Products > Digital products
  3. Select the video from the list of products  > check the streamable option 
  4. Click Save 

Can I limit the stock of my products?

Yes, you can manually influence the amount of stock for each product and offer a limited number for a single product or variant of a product. 

If the entire stock of a product has sold, the product will be displayed as "out of stock" on the product page and main store page (see images below).

Note: It's not possible to change the stock for all products at the same time. You'll need to manage the stock of each product, or variant(s) of a product, individually.

You can manage the stock of each product directly in the Product Editor. Here's how you can edit the stock of any product:

  1. Log into your Sellfy account
  2. Navigate to Products > select the product you want to edit
  3. Scroll down to Stock section
  4. Switch the toggle next to Unlimited (it should be grey)
  5. Set the number of stock for this product
  6. Click Save Product

How to customize the product URL

Important! Product URLs for products added prior to 6 May 2020 will consist of a uniquely generated product key (a string of numbers and letters) rather than a customized product slug with the product name. You can manually customize the slug in the product editor for products uploaded before 6 May 2020 by re-editing the product name and saving the changes.

We automatically include the name of your product in the URL. So, to customize the product slug you'll simply want to edit the name of the product.

Essentially, the URL will consist of the word  sellfy (unless you're using the custom domain feature), your Sellfy store name, and the product name separated by hyphens.  

So, the product name will be added at the end of the URL as a custom slug, as shown in the image below.

We automatically convert special characters and spaces for you so the slug will contain the name of the product separated by hyphens as demonstrated in the image below.

How to update or re-upload product files

Once you've uploaded your digital product on Sellfy, you can edit it whenever you want. This means you can also change the product file to offer an updated version to the buyers. 

Unless you've previously told your customers they'll receive a product update, make sure to also send out a Product Update email to let them know about the changes and to re-send them the download link. At the moment, Product Update emails are only sent out to those customers who opted in to receiving news from you by checking the opt-in box at the Checkout. Read more about email updates in the section below.

Note: Email marketing is available with the previous Basic, Pro and Pro Plus subscriptions as well as our current Business and Premium plans.

To change the product file:

  1. Go to the Products section
  2. Select the product you want to edit
  3. Upload the new file(s) just like you uploaded the original file(s)
  4. Delete the old file, if it's no longer necessary in the updated product version

Important! Product files are deleted permanently and can't be retrieved from our servers. If you don't have backups on your own computer, make sure to download files before you delete them.

How to notify customers about product updates

Once you've updated the product file, send out an email to previous buyers to let them know about the changes.

Note: Email Marketing is not available with the Starter package.

To send out an email about the product update:

  1. Go to Marketing > Email marketing
  2. Click the Send new email button
  3. In the Campaign type drop-down list, select Product Update
  4. Select the product you've updated
  5. The recipient list is set to automatically include only the buyers of the selected product
  6. Enter email subject
  7. Enter email content
  8. Click on the Add download button checkbox below the email content editor to make sure your buyers receive the updated download link
  9. Finally, click Send emails (you can also send out a test email to yourself first)

What is the maximum product file size?

The maximum product file size will depend on the Sellfy plan you’re using. There is no limit to the overall products you can sell in your store, but there is a limit for individual product file sizes. Look at the table below to see what the limits are for each plan.

Note: We recommend that you keep the individual file size below 5GB to ensure that your customers are able to download your products. Due to differences in internet availability across regions, some customers may not be able to save large product files and, as a result, may request refunds.

Q: What file formats can I sell?

A: Sellfy supports all static file formats, meaning you can upload pretty much any digital file that can be downloaded and used independently. If you're using .zip/.rar formats for product files, we recommend adding downloading and installing instructions for your customers to save them a lot of frustration and prevent refunds.

Q: What size files can I add?

A: You can add single files, and up to 50 files per product, of up to 10GB in size (combined per product). If your product file is larger, you may compress files to a zip folder.

Q: How many products can I add to my store?

A: There is no limitation on how many products you can upload or sell from your store. If any of your products exceed the 10GB file size limit, please contact [email protected] to inquire about a custom plan.

Q: Can I add Terms and Conditions to my store?

A: Yes! You can add Terms and Conditions to your store, using our Store Pages. You can also make acceptance of these Terms mandatory for customers before they make a purchase.

Q: What is Sellfy's bandwidth limit?

A: Bandwidth is unlimited. Sellfy has no restriction on data transfer.

Q: Can I host my own products?

A: No. We host all products on secure and reputable Amazon servers, and there isn't an option to host files yourself.

Q: How many products can I have and sell with Sellfy?

A: There is no limitation as to how many products you can sell. However, there is a limit as to how much revenue you can make with products. To see more details about how much revenue you can generate annually with each plan, click here

Q: Where are your servers located and are my files hosted? 

A: Sellfy uses the Amazon cloud to store files. Amazon cloud has multiple locations globally.
